Colorbond cladding for transportable homes is pre-painted Australian steel sheeting, roll-formed into a profile and fixed to the wall frame in the factory before the finished building is loaded onto a truck. It is the weatherproof outer skin of the home. It is not a paint system brushed onto the walls once the building reaches your block.
That distinction matters more on a relocatable than it does on a house that will never move. A slab-on-ground home is clad in place and stays there. A portable building is clad while it sits on a factory floor, then strapped down, lifted, driven at highway speed and set on stumps or a chassis at the other end. The skin has to survive the journey looking exactly as it did when it left.

Steel Frames, Steel Skin And Weight On The Road
Colorbond is Australian-made pre-finished steel, and the colour is on the sheet before it ever reaches your wall frame. That is where its robust weather resistance comes from, and it is why the exterior arrives on your block already finished rather than curing in the weather. Behind that skin sits a steel frame. Our portable healthcare buildings are framed in Trucore steel for durability and lifespan, with Colourbond cladding over it. Steel frame plus steel skin gives you a wall that will not warp, swell or absorb water on the trip, and one that is light.
Weight is the quiet constraint on any relocatable: everything you hang on the frame has to be towed or craned, so a lightweight sheet skin buys you building size that a masonry or rendered wall would spend on mass alone. Many of our spacious configurations span up to 3 or 3.5 metres in width to ensure optimal interior liveability, and the wall finish is part of what keeps that width practical to move.

Colour, Heat And A Lightweight Building
Colour is a comfort decision before it is an aesthetic one. A lighter roof and wall reflect more of the sun than a dark one, and on a Queensland summer afternoon that shows up as air-conditioning load rather than as a matter of taste.
A lightweight relocatable has almost no thermal mass, so it heats and cools quickly, and the wall build-up behind the sheet does the work that masonry would otherwise do. That means the sarking, the cavity and the insulation matter as much as the colour on the outside. If you are set on a dark exterior for a granny flat build, say so at specification stage so the wall is designed around it, not after the frames are up.
Profiles, Fixings And The Highway Trip
Specifying Colorbond cladding for transportable homes is mostly a question of profile and fixing pattern, because the building has to arrive undamaged. Walling profiles are not the same as roofing profiles. (Sheet roof and wall cladding is governed by the Australian Building Codes Board in NCC Part 3.5.1, which calls up design and installation to AS 1562.1.)
A deeper rib is stiffer across the sheet and holds its line on the long, narrow wall spans typical of a portable, while a broad flat pan shows far more of any ripple in the surface. That is worth knowing before you choose a profile off a display board for a building that will be lifted, strapped down and driven. A transportable also has far more metal-to-metal junctions than a slab home: steel skin meeting a galvanised subframe, aluminium window frames, flashings and fasteners. Mixing incompatible metals or leaving cut edges unprotected invites corrosion at exactly those junctions. Salt spray near the coast makes that detailing matter more, not less, and it changes fastener and flashing selection. Tell us the destination site, not just the delivery address, if the two differ.
How A Clad Building Comes Together And How We Quote It
The cladding stage sits inside a fixed sequence that begins once your quote is agreed. In most cases your portable building will take 10-12 weeks to complete.
- Fixed price quote: manufacturing does not proceed until you have agreed to a fixed price, written quote covering the building you want.
- Frame and sheet: the steel frame and the cladding go on in a factory-controlled environment rather than out in the weather.
- Staged quality checks: the building passes through a series of staged quality checks during our manufacturing process.
- Delivery: the building is transported and set on site, backed by complete engineering compliance certification.
We will not proceed manufacturing your new portable home or granny flat until you have agreed to our fixed price, written quote. You save money when buying directly from us, and on mining dongas you can save again by purchasing in bulk. If we encounter delays, we will communicate these to you immediately, so you are always in the loop about our progress at all stages of the building process.

(Approval requirements follow the destination state: in New South Wales, installing a manufactured home or moveable dwelling is an activity needing council approval under section 68 of the Local Government Act 1993.)
Where the building will finally stand shapes how it is detailed, from tie-down to fastener and flashing selection, which is why we ask about location at quote stage rather than working from the delivery address alone. In Queensland, siting and boundary setbacks on the block are set by the Queensland Development Code, administered by your council. When your building is ready for delivery, it comes backed by complete engineering compliance certification. Frequently Asked Questions
Can a single damaged sheet be replaced later?
Yes. Sheeting is fixed panel by panel, so an individual sheet can be swapped without stripping the wall. Keep a note of your exact colour and profile, and be aware that a new sheet next to one that has weathered for several years may read slightly differently until it settles.
Does a dark colour make a portable building hot?
Dark colours absorb more heat than light ones, and a lightweight building has little thermal mass to buffer it. That does not rule a dark exterior out. It means the insulation and wall build-up have to be specified for it from the start, so choose the colour and the wall specification in the same conversation.
How does it compare with fibre cement or weatherboard on weight?
A steel sheet skin is the lighter option compared with fibre cement, brick veneer or render, which is why it suits a chassis or craned build. Lower wall weight leaves more of your transport allowance for the building itself rather than the finish.
What maintenance does the cladding need?
Very little. Regular washing keeps the finish looking as it should. Areas that rain does not reach, such as wall cladding under eaves, should be hosed down from time to time, and more often near the coast.
